How much nitrogen can a nitrogen generator produce?

Jun 21 , 2024

The amount of nitrogen that can be produced by a nitrogen generator depends on several factors, including the type, size and intended use of the generator. The following are the main types of nitrogen generators and their typical production capacities:

1. Membrane-type nitrogen generators:

  • Small Units: These units can produce from 1 to 100 standard cubic feet per hour (SCFH) of nitrogen and are suitable for small laboratories or low-demand industrial applications.

Medium Units: These units produce 100 to 1,000 SCFH per hour and are suitable for medium-sized industrial operations.

Large Units: These units can produce 1,000 to more than 10,000 SCFH per hour and are suitable for large industrial applications or processes that require a large supply of nitrogen.

2. Pressure Pressure Adsorption (PSA) Nitrogen Generators:

Small Units: These units can produce 1 to 500 SCFH per hour and are typically used in laboratory settings or small manufacturing processes.

Medium Size Units: These units can produce 500 to 5,000 SCFH and are used in a variety of industrial applications.

Large Units: Can produce 5,000 to over 50,000 SCFH and are used in large industrial plants such as petrochemical facilities, food packaging and electronics manufacturing.

3. Cryogenic nitrogen generators:

Industrial-Scale Units: Can produce thousands to millions of SCFH and are typically used in very large industrial applications requiring high purity nitrogen.

Specific examples:

Laboratory Nitrogen Generators: Typically produce about 1 to 10 SCFH.

Industrial PSA Nitrogen Generators: Medium-sized units may produce about 500 to 2,000 SCFH, while large industrial units can exceed 10,000 SCFH.

Cryogenic Units: Large cryogenic units can produce up to 50,000 SCFH of nitrogen, with some facilities capable of producing hundreds of thousands of SCFH.

The exact capacity also depends on the purity of the nitrogen required. Higher purity nitrogen production typically results in lower yields due to more stringent filtration and separation processes.

For a specific nitrogen generator, you will need to consult the manufacturer's specifications, which provide detailed information on production capacity at various purities and operating conditions.
